It was how we paid them back

It was how we paid them back

for hanging out with us
for buying our dinner
for lending us a smoke
for bringing the vodka and grenadine
for giving us a ride to school
for not telling us that we were annoying
for getting us giggly girly high
for flipping the bird to that bitch we hated
for paying a slight bit of attention
for tutoring us on that quiz
for letting us tutor them
for their time

It was how we paid them back

for hanging out with us
for buying our dinner
for lending us a smoke
for bringing the vodka and grenadine
for giving us a ride to school
for not telling us that we were annoying
for getting us giggly girly high
for flipping the bird to that bitch we hated
for paying a slight bit of attention
for tutoring us on that quiz
for letting us tutor them
for their time

on our backs, moving like jagged
bits of foam over an active length of river,
or sometimes on our knees
while they talked pretty things
that just got in our way.

and girl,
it seemed like it was just
the way things were done
and girl,
we never thought to tell them no.

we never thought to tell them no until
they started acting like
it was "something"
we had with them
when it was just how we paid
them back.

Last time I heard from you,
we were still both writing those kind of
checks
and dealing in that sort of unspoken barter

It has been some time
and my last check cleared
a few years ago now,
but I am wondering how your
account is holding up these days

and if you, too found out
that there's nothing any boy will do
that we ever need to pay them back for.
